Grow Your Own Garden! Home Garden Inspiration + Free Printable Care Cards

There is something so special about watching a garden grow, especially when you planted it yourself.

Whether you’re just getting started or wanting fresh garden inspiration, this post has everything you need to start planting with confidence. I’m sharing what’s growing in my coastal garden box…plus a free set of printable care cards to help you grow your own space with ease.

There’s something magical about stepping outside and picking fresh herbs, vegetables, and blooms right from your own little garden. Or, if you’re like me, it’s the simple joy of running out in the morning to see what’s grown overnight.

This garden is designed for small spaces, partial to full sun, and beginners who want to grow a little bit of everything.

If you’re new to gardening, it can feel a little overwhelming, but don’t let that stop you. Just dive in, go at your own pace, and learn as you grow. Once you start, you might just fall in love with this beautiful little hobby.

What’s Growing in My Coastal Garden

Strawberries
Persian Cucumbers
Japanese Eggplant
Grow as you go—don’t stress about perfection. You might notice a few nibbles or spots on my leaves, and that’s okay! Nature isn’t flawless, and that’s part of the beauty. With the help of companion planting and a little coastal sunshine, my garden is thriving in its own way—and yours can too.

This season, I’ve filled my sunny little garden box with a mix of fresh herbs, veggies, and cheerful blooms. It’s amazing how much you can grow—even in a small space—when you choose the right plants for your climate and light.

Cherry Tomatoes

Here’s a peek at what’s currently growing in my garden:

  • 🍅 Cherry Tomatoes
  • 🌿 Basil
  • 🥒 Persian Cucumbers
  • 🍓 Strawberries
  • 🍆 Japanese Eggplant
  • 🌼 Marigolds, Zinnias, and Calendulas (great for companion planting!)

Each plant brings something special to the mix, whether it’s fresh flavor, natural pest control, or simple joy when something blooms. I’ve included care cards for all of these in the free garden kit—scroll down to grab yours!

You don’t need a huge yard to start growing your own food. Whether you have a patio, balcony, or sunny window, here are a few beginner-friendly tips for creating a thriving garden in a small space:

  • Pick the sunniest spot you can find. Many vegetables and herbs need at least 6 hours of sun.
  • Use containers with drainage. Choose pots, grow bags, or repurposed planters that let excess water out.
  • Start with easy plants. Go for herbs like basil or mint, or tried-and-true veggies like cherry tomatoes or lettuce.
  • Feed your soil. Use high-quality potting mix and add compost if you can.
  • Water regularly. Container gardens dry out faster than ground soil—check them daily.

It might feel intimidating at first, but the trick is to just start. Learn as you go—and don’t forget to grab my free printable care cards to help you along the way.

If you’re new to gardening, start with plants that are low-maintenance, fast-growing, and forgiving. These are some of my favorite beginner-friendly options:

List Block

  • Cherry Tomatoes – Sweet, rewarding, and grow well in pots.
  • Basil – Great for summer dishes and easy to grow with full sun.
  • Mint – Super hardy (but keep it in its own container or it’ll take over!).
  • Nasturtiums – Edible flowers that double as pollinator attractors and pest deterrents.

Cherry tomatoes and basil are included in my Coastal Garden Care Kit with its own care card, making it even easier to get started with confidence.

Companion planting is the idea that certain plants grow better when they’re placed next to each other. Some plants improve each other’s growth, deter pests, or even enhance flavor when grown together.
